Things worth knowing

  • Uzbekistan is one of only two doubly landlocked countries on Earth, meaning every neighbour it touches is itself landlocked.
  • Samarkand and Bukhara were among the great hubs of the Silk Road, their turquoise-tiled madrasas and mosques among the finest architecture of the medieval Islamic world.
  • The Soviet diversion of two great rivers to irrigate cotton fields drained the Aral Sea so severely that ships now rust on what is bare desert.

Did you know

Samarkand was the capital of Tamerlane, the conqueror whose empire reached from the gates of Delhi to the plains of Anatolia, and his tomb still stands there beneath a fluted turquoise dome.
