Things worth knowing
- The Hindu Kush mountains split the country, with peaks rising above 7,000 metres in the Wakhan Corridor, a thin finger of land that reaches east to touch China.
- Landlocked and ringed by six neighbours, it sits on the ancient Silk Road, where Greek, Persian, Mongol and Buddhist worlds once met and traded.
- Before Islam arrived, Afghanistan was a major centre of Buddhism, and giant Buddha statues stood carved into the cliffs of Bamiyan for some fifteen centuries.

The lapis lazuli prized by ancient Egyptians and Renaissance painters for its deep blue came almost entirely from a single Afghan mountain region, Badakhshan, mined for over 6,000 years.
