How is year progress calculated?

Year progress is the share of the current year that has already elapsed. We take the time from January 1st 00:00 to right now, divide it by the full length of the year, and multiply by 100. The exact percentage uses elapsed time between local January 1 midnights. The day counters use calendar dates, so a daylight-saving change does not lose or add a day.

Year progress = elapsed time ÷ total time in the year × 100.

What percentage of the year is one day?

A regular year has 365 days: one day is about 0.274%. A leap year has 366 days: one day is about 0.273%. For example, 2026 has 365 days and 2028 has 366. At the start of January 1, progress is 0%; it reaches 100% at the next January 1, when the new year's counter starts at 0%.

Why do year progress calculators show different numbers?

Some count today as a completed day; others count only full days or include the time of day. Time zones also matter. Here, a selected date means midnight at the start of that date. Days left includes that date, while the countdown shows the actual time until January 1.

Use year progress to check a goal

For a goal of reading 24 books in a year, the halfway point corresponds to 12 books if you want an even pace. Pick your next review date above and compare the year's percentage with the share of your goal completed. For a longer view, try the Life in Weeks calculator.
