How the countdown works

The page takes the current time from your device and counts to 00:00 on the next January 1 in your time zone. Travel to another zone and the target moves with you. Hidden tabs stop ticking to save battery, then catch up the moment you come back.

On January 1 itself the page says Happy New Year for the whole day and starts counting toward the following year.

Where New Year arrives first and last

The first people to see the new year live on Kiritimati, also called Christmas Island, in the Line Islands of Kiribati. The islands keep UTC+14, so midnight arrives there at 10:00 UTC on December 31. New Zealand's Chatham Islands follow 15 minutes later, then Tonga, Samoa and mainland New Zealand at UTC+13.

At the other end of the map sit Baker Island and Howland Island, uninhabited US territories at UTC-12. They are the last places on Earth to reach January 1, at 12:00 UTC. Among places where people live, American Samoa and Niue are last, at UTC-11. From the first midnight to the last takes 26 hours.

Is the countdown accurate?

It reads the clock and time zone of your device, including any daylight saving rules. Phones and computers that set their time automatically are usually within a second of the real time. If your clock is wrong, the countdown will be wrong by the same amount.
