Things worth knowing
- At Khartoum the Blue Nile from Ethiopia and the White Nile flowing up from the Great Lakes region merge into the single river that runs on through Egypt to the Mediterranean.
- Its northern deserts hold more ancient pyramids than Egypt does, the steep-sided royal tombs of the kingdom of Kush at sites such as Meroe.
- For centuries the kingdom of Kush ruled this land, and its kings even ruled Egypt itself as the pharaohs of the 25th Dynasty.
Did you know
Those Kushite kings raised so many pyramids along the Nile that Sudan, not Egypt, is home to more pyramids than any other country on Earth.
