Things worth knowing
- The Irrawaddy River runs the length of the country like a spine, carrying water from its eastern-Himalayan headwaters down to a vast delta and serving as Myanmar's historic highway of trade and rice.
- Drivers here keep to the right yet sit on the right-hand side of the car, a quirk left over when the country abruptly switched which side of the road to drive on.
- On Inle Lake, the Intha people row standing on one leg, wrapping the other around an oar so their hands stay free to tend floating gardens and conical fish traps.
