Things worth knowing
- Long before oil reshaped the peninsula, this was Arabia Felix — "Happy Arabia" — the incense kingdoms that grew rich shipping frankincense and myrrh to Rome.
- Sana'a's old city is packed with tower-houses of rammed earth and burnt brick, some rising several storeys and decorated with white gypsum tracery around the windows.
- On the island of Socotra, isolation has bred plants found nowhere else, including the umbrella-shaped dragon's blood tree that bleeds crimson sap.
