Things worth knowing
- Long known to traders as Ceylon, the island lies just off India's southern tip, separated by a shallow chain of shoals once called Adam's Bridge.
- Its ancient capital, Anuradhapura, grew around a sacred fig tree said to be grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
- Two monsoons sweep the island at opposite times of year, so one coast can bask in sunshine while the other is drenched in rain.

Sigiriya, a sheer rock fortress rising some 200 metres from the plain, was built by a king as a palace in the clouds, its walls once frescoed with court beauties.
