- Machu Picchu, the 15th-century Inca citadel perched on an Andean ridge, was so well hidden that Spanish conquistadors never found it and the outside world largely forgot it until 1911.
- The Amazon River draws its most distant source from a glacial stream high in the Peruvian Andes, meaning the world's mightiest river begins as snowmelt on a mountainside.
- Etched into Peru's coastal desert, the Nazca Lines form giant figures of animals and geometric shapes so vast that their designs are only fully legible from high above.
