Things worth knowing
- The Demilitarized Zone separating it from the South has stayed so untouched by humans that it became an accidental wildlife sanctuary, sheltering rare cranes and possibly Amur leopards.
- The country follows its own Juche calendar, which begins in 1912, the birth year of founding leader Kim Il-sung, rather than the Gregorian count.
- Its rugged interior is dominated by mountains, crowned by Paektu, a sacred volcano whose summit crater holds one of the deepest crater lakes on Earth.

Pyongyang's metro stations run more than a hundred metres underground, deep enough to double as bomb shelters, and rank among the deepest transit systems anywhere.
