Things worth knowing
- The Niger River, Africa's third-longest, swings in a great arc up toward the Sahara before bending back southeast, watering the country's far southwest around Niamey.
- Most of the land is Sahara, but the north rises into the Air Mountains and the vast Tenere sands, where ancient rock art records giraffes and cattle from a time when the desert was green.
- Among the nomadic Wodaabe Fulani, the Gerewol courtship festival turns the tables: men paint their faces, bare their teeth and dance for hours so the women can judge who is most beautiful.
Did you know
For decades Niger's uranium mines near Arlit have helped fuel France's nuclear reactors, quietly keeping faraway lights on across Europe.
