Things worth knowing
- Lake Malawi, which stretches along most of the country's eastern edge, is so deep and ancient that it holds more species of fish than any other lake on Earth, most of them found nowhere else.
- The colourful cichlid fish in that lake are a textbook case of evolution in action, having radiated into hundreds of distinct species within a single body of water.
- Malawi is landlocked and largely highland, with the Great Rift Valley slicing through it, so its scenery swings from cool plateaus to lakeshore beaches that locals treat as a coastline.
Did you know
Scottish explorer David Livingstone reached the lake in 1859 and called it the Lake of Stars, after the way fishermen's lamps flicker across the dark water at night.
