Things worth knowing
- Before independence the territory was called the Gold Coast, and the modern nation took the name Ghana from a powerful medieval West African empire that actually lay far to the northwest.
- In 1957 it became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to win independence from colonial rule, making it a beacon for liberation movements across the continent.
- The artificial Lake Volta, formed behind the Akosombo Dam, is one of the largest reservoirs on Earth by surface area and submerged hundreds of villages when it filled.
