How to learn all the flags of the world (that actually stick)

There are 196 flags if you count every country, and the fastest way to remember none of them is to stare at a poster with all of them at once. Flags are actually a great thing to memorise. Your brain is good at pictures. You just have to feed them in one at a time.

Chunk by continent

Don’t try to learn 196 flags. Learn the 54 African ones, then the 48 in Asia, and so on. Grouping by region gives your memory something to hang each flag on, and you start spotting patterns: the red, yellow and green that runs across Africa, the off-centre crosses on every Nordic flag, the red-white-black-green of the Arab world. Learn one pattern and you pick up a dozen flags with it.

Learn the look-alikes as pairs

Most of the difficulty comes from a handful of flags that look nearly identical:

• Chad and Romania. Same blue, yellow and red stripes. Chad’s blue is a shade darker, and that’s about the only difference.
• Indonesia and Monaco. Both red over white. Monaco’s is a little squarer.
• Netherlands and Luxembourg. Luxembourg’s blue is lighter and its stripe is thinner.
• Ireland and Ivory Coast. Same three colours, mirrored.

Put each pair side by side on purpose. Once you can tell the two apart, both of them stick.

Test, don’t re-read

Re-reading a chart feels like studying and teaches you almost nothing. What builds memory is trying to recall the answer before you see it. That’s the whole reason a quiz beats a poster. When you get one wrong, good. The miss is the signal that this flag needs another look.

Space it out

The thing that matters most is spacing your reviews. See a flag again just before you’d forget it, and every time you get it right the next review moves further out. Do that and 196 flags settle into long-term memory over a few weeks, instead of getting crammed and lost in a few days.
