How to crop a horizontal video to 9:16 on Android

To turn a horizontal video into a vertical clip on Android, open it in a video cropper, choose 9:16, position the subject inside the crop, and export a new file. Watch the whole preview first: a person who fits at the start can walk out of your crop halfway through.

The choice that matters most comes before the export settings. Do you want the video to fill a vertical frame, or do you need to preserve everything in the original shot?

Crop, fit, or stretch?

An ordinary crop cannot preserve the entire width of a landscape shot while also filling a portrait frame. If you need the whole scene, use an editor with a canvas or background option. Crop a clip with Cropzen

1. Open the original clip. Use the camera file when you have it, rather than a smaller copy downloaded from a chat.
2. Choose the 9:16 aspect ratio. This sets the vertical shape. It does not mean the video is already 1080 × 1920 pixels; resolution is a separate choice.
3. Drag the picture into position. Keep the subject inside the crop and use only as much zoom as the composition needs.
4. Preview the entire clip. Check moving hands, faces, subtitles, and objects near the edges. Pay particular attention to camera pans.
5. Trim the beginning and end if needed. Cropping changes the visible area; trimming changes the duration. You may need either or both.
6. Export, then watch the saved file. Check the framing, sound, and final moment before sharing it. Keep the original for future edits.

For a longer clip with a moving subject, one fixed crop may not work. Choose a shorter section where the subject stays in view, keep a wider composition, or use an editor that lets the crop position change over time.

Why does a vertical crop look softer?

A 16:9 landscape frame cropped to 9:16 while keeping its full height retains about 32% of the original width. The other 68% is outside the crop. This comes from the geometry: (9 ÷ 16) ÷ (16 ÷ 9) = 0.3164.

That makes a large difference to a 1920 × 1080 source. Its narrow crop is only about 608 pixels wide before resizing. Exporting that crop at 1080 × 1920 enlarges the remaining picture; it cannot restore the parts or detail you removed.

A higher-resolution original gives you more pixels to work with, but choosing a larger export size alone does not create extra captured detail. If the crop looks soft, try less zoom or choose a shot where the subject already fills more of the frame.

Cropping also differs from a lossless trim. Some trimming operations can copy the existing encoded video, while changing the visible picture generally requires processing and encoding frames. Android’s media transformation documentation describes that distinction. A lossless-trim feature does not make every crop lossless.

Does every YouTube Short have to be 9:16?

No. YouTube accepts square or vertical videos up to three minutes as Shorts under its current upload rules. A 9:16 frame is a useful choice for a portrait composition, but it is not the only qualifying shape. See YouTube’s Shorts eligibility guidance.

If cropping a wide group shot removes someone, a square crop may be a better fit for that particular Short. Check the result in the destination app’s preview, including any captions and controls covering the picture.

Can you crop several videos at once?
