Average vocabulary size by age, from toddler to adult
How many words a 2-year-old, a 5-year-old, a teenager and an adult native speaker actually know, why the published figures disagree so wildly, and where learners fit on the same scale.
Vocabulary grows fastest when nobody is trying. A child adds thousands of words a year without a single flashcard, then growth slows to a crawl in adulthood and never quite stops.
Here is the shape of that curve, with the caveat that every number in this article depends on what you count as a word. More on that below, because it is the reason published figures for “adult vocabulary” range from 15,000 to 42,000 and both are defensible.
The curve, roughly

The interesting part is not the top of the curve, it is the middle. Between ages 5 and 16 a child picks up roughly a thousand word families a year, almost none of them taught directly. They arrive through reading and conversation, which is why the strongest predictor of a teenager’s vocabulary is how much they read rather than how much vocabulary instruction they received.
Growth does not stop at 20 either. Adults keep adding words slowly for decades, which is why studies that test 60-year-olds usually find several thousand more than they find in 20-year-olds.
Why the published numbers disagree
Three counting decisions explain almost all the variation.
Word families or lemmas. A word family groups “run”, “runs”, “running”, “ran”, “runner” and “rerun” as one item. Lemmas split several of those apart. Counting lemmas roughly doubles the figure, which is how the widely quoted study finding an average adult knows around 42,000 lemmas sits next to test-based estimates of 17,000 word families without either being wrong.
Proper nouns and compounds. Include place names, brands and multi-word items and the number climbs again.
Recognition or use. Receptive vocabulary is always far larger than productive vocabulary. The words you understand while reading outnumber the words you reach for in speech by a factor of two or three.
So when you see a number, the useful question is not whether it is right but which of those three it assumed.
Where learners sit on the same scale
An English learner at B2 recognises roughly what a native 6-year-old does, which sounds discouraging and should not be. The overlap is misleading, because the learner’s 4,000 word families are the frequent ones, chosen by textbooks and frequency lists, while the child’s include a pile of concrete nouns from their own life.
The learner can read a news article. The 6-year-old cannot. Frequency matters far more than raw count, which is the whole reason vocabulary tests sample by frequency band instead of pulling random dictionary entries.
Around 3,000 frequent word families already cover about 95% of everyday spoken English. That is why a learner reaches functional fluency long before their count looks impressive next to a native speaker’s, and why chasing the native number is the wrong target.
Measuring your own
Nobody counts by hand. Vocabulary tests sample a few dozen words spread across frequency bands, check which you recognise, then scale each band up to its real size.
